Maryland man faces up to 90 years in prison after admitting to mortgage modification scheme

A Maryland man faces up to 90 years in prison after admitting late last week to defrauding homeowners in a three-year mortgage modification scheme by illicitly taking upfront fees and then stealing the their monthly mortgage payments. Rodney Getlan, 45, of Owings Mills, Md., pled guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court to mortgage fraud against nine homeowners which made him eligible prison time that could reach 90 years. As part of a plea agreement, the county prosecutor’s office is seeking 40 years with 10 suspended and has dropped charges against him for felony theft and operating as a credit service business without a license while Getlan has promised to pay restitution to 48 victims. In court, the prosecutors said Getlan presented himself to homeowners between 2009 and 2012 as a loan modification specialist and promised them lower monthly mortgage payments for an upfront fee of $1,500 to $2,500.
