Agents of the Internal Revenue Service's criminal investigation unit recently traveled to Macau and gathered information about international money flows into U.S. casinos, sources familiar with the matter said. The trip came even as the U.S. Treasury Department's anti-money laundering unit prepared to clarify its due diligence expectations for U.S. casinos that allow high-rollers to transfer funds from the tiny former Portuguese colony and elsewhere. Speaking at an anti-money laundering (AML) conference in Las Vegas earlier this month, a supervisory special agent with Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) acknowledged the trip to Macau and said it helped participating federal agents understand some of the peculiarities of money transfer methods in the special administrative region of China known for its massive casino industry, sources who were present said.
