Canadian jurisdictions delay key implementation milestones for new national securities regulator

Ontario, British Columbia, and the Canadian federal government have jointly announced several delays in the implementation of a planned national securities regulator. While stressing that the final completion date remained July 1, 2015, the participants pushed back the milestone date for completing the draft provincial capital markets legislation, draft complementary federal legislation, and the Cooperative Capital Market Regulator's (CCMR's) memorandum of agreement from January 31 to April 30, 2014 In September 2013, the three governments announced their plan to form the CCMR to create Canada's first cross-jurisdictional securities regulator, which would also give the federal government a degree of prudential oversight that it had not previously enjoyed. The delay also means that the CCMR's draft regulations will now be scheduled for completion by June 30, instead of March 31, 2014.
