New York prosecutors look to reform state's white-collar criminal laws

A New York prosecutors' group launched an effort Wednesday to reform the state's white-collar criminal laws and practices, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said. The task force is expected to issue a public report within nine months to one year making recommendations for substantive and procedural reforms to improve the prosecution of white-collar crime in the state. "New York is the financial capital of the country and we have a responsibility to make sure that state prosecutors in New York have the tools they need to combat white-collar crime in the 21st century," Vance said on Wednesday announcing the effort. The work will be led by district attorneys, assistant district attorneys, federal prosecutors, private practitioners and academics, including a retired judge of the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. The members will review the state's anti-fraud and anti-corruption laws, including its powerful but limited Martin Act, which dates to 1921, and will recommend
