PEPwatch: Former Atlanta school official faces corruption and laundering allegations

A former public school official in Atlanta has been indicted on conspiracy, fraud, corruption and money laundering charges for allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for an IT contract worth nearly $800,000, federal prosecutors in Georgia announced Tuesday. Jerome Oberlton, 47, was the chief information officer for Atlanta Public Schools between June 2004 and August 2007, and was responsible for its information technology program. In January 2007, Atlanta Public Schools, a school district with about 100 schools, solicited proposals for a data-warehousing project. Oberlton ensured that a Detroit-based computer company received the $780,000 contract in exchange for bribes, the indictment in the case states. He received the bribes through two front companies he created -- Global Technology Partners and Global Technology Services -- the indictment adds. It states that the bribes came on the form of checks that were disguised as payments for consulting services. Oberlton was charged
